Our Story
Seven Cities Blues Society in Hampton Roads is the result of years spent gathering with blues fans, learning directly from artists, and sharing the joy of live music across the region. Our roots stretch back to invitations from local blues groups nearly a decade ago, and after experiencing the ups and downs of those communities, we knew it was time to build something lasting. In 2025, we formally created a 501 non-profit dedicated to bringing local and visiting blues artists together with people who love this music. Every workshop, jam, and festival we host is about much more than songs on stage - it's about welcoming new friends, making sure every voice is heard, and keeping the spirit of the blues alive for everyone. That's why we invite you not just to listen, but to join in, support our artists, and help build a community where blues thrive for generations.

Seven Cities Blues Society, based in Hampton Roads, Virginia, is a 501 non-profit organization for music promotion that brings together blues lovers, musicians, and learners through artist support, events, and community-building. Leading our mission is Carl Bonner, known to many on the scene as "Catfish." Born and raised on the south side of Chicago, Carl's journey began with a love for blues and a commitment to community learning. With a doctorate in Physical Chemistry and years as a full professor at Norfolk State University, Carl shaped academic programs and mentored students - but his heart always found its rhythm on the blues stage. As an organizer of the Chicago Blues Guitar Workshop and a regular presence at local jams since 2015, he bridges generations and backgrounds with genuine warmth. Carl's vision for Seven Cities Blues Society is simple: to make blues accessible for everyone, support local talent, and keep every gathering as welcoming as a traveling party. Anyone passionate about music or looking to find a home in the blues community will connect with Carl's approach - friendly, open, and built on real connections.
